Indonesian Language and Cultural Program

A. TRIMESTER PROGRAM

SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
1. LANGUAGE To teach the students Bahasa Indonesia from basic skills to intermediate and advanced levels, using President University’s Indonesian lecturers.
2. ARTS AND CULTURE To teach students the diversity of Indonesian arts and culture, from the Eastern to the Western Provinces of Indonesia.
3. HISTORY AND POLITICS To teach students the complexity of Indonesia, from the earliest known history to the country’s modern history and politics.
4. VISITS TO PLACES OF HISTORICAL INTERESTS, PLUS GOVERNMENT OFFICES, NGOs, AND CIVIL SOCIETIES. To familiarize students with historical sites in West Java and Banten Provinces, and to interact with government and non-governmental offices, which have a strong association with Indonesia.
5. WORKSHOPS To critically examine the ongoing program through papers and presentations. This will involve our students plus participants from inside and outside the university.

Details of the Program

BAHASA INDONESIA: To teach the students Bahasa Indonesia from basic skills to intermediate and advanced levels. The students will be taught by the university’s Indonesian Lecturers.
SEMESTER I Basic Bahasa Indonesia.

  1. Greetings.
  2. Pronounciation.
  3. Basic writing and reading skills.
  4. Basic listening and speaking skills (greetings, time, directions.)
SEMESTER II Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia.

  1. Holding interesting and intelligible conversations.
  2. Learning to write in a skillful and understandable manner.
  3. Learning to write reports and essays for assignments.
SEMESTER III Advanced Bahasa Indonesia. High level Bahasa Indonesia as used in newspapers and other media outlets, as well as in Courts of Law.
ARTS AND CULTURE: To teach students the diversity of the Indonesian arts and culture, from the Eastern to the Western part of Indonesia.
SEMESTER I The diversity of Sumatera Island
SEMESTER II The diversity of Java and Bali Islands
SEMESTER III The diversity of the Eastern part of Indonesia
HISTORY AND POLITICS: To teach students the complexity of Indonesia, from the earliest known history to the country’s modern history and politics.
SEMESTER I As students learn about the various provinces in Indonesia, they will also learn the history of that area: The early kingdoms, the colonial period, the fight for independence (1945).
SEMESTER II The Sukarno and Suharto periods (1945-1998).
SEMESTER III The era of reform (1998-2010).
WORKSHOPS AND VISITS TO PLACES OF HISTORICAL INTEREST, GOVERNMENT MINISTRIES, LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES, INDUSTRIES, NGOs, AND CIVIL SOCIETIES:To familiarize students with historical sites in West Java Province, and to interact with the government and non-governmental offices, which have a strong association with Indonesia.
SEMESTER I VISITS:

  6. Local NGO (1): Wahana Lingkungan Hidup (dealing with environmental issues).
  7. Religious insitutions (1): Nahdatul Ulama.
  8. Historical sites (6): Monas/Satria Mandala, .
  9. Tourism sites (2): Taman Mini/Ancol.
  10. Pencak Silat, on Friday (6x).
  11. Traditional Dancing, on Friday (6x).
  12. Optional: Angklung or other instrument.
SEMESTER II

B. TWO MONTH PROGRAM

1. LANGUAGE To ensure that the students have sufficient skills in Bahasa Indonesia to be able to carry out everyday conversations. We will use President University’s Indonesian lecturers for this part of the program.
2. ARTS AND CULTURE To teach students the basics of the diversity of  Indonesian arts and culture, from the Eastern to the Western Provinces of Indonesia.
3. HISTORY AND POLITICS To ensure that the students have a basic knowledge of the complexity of Indonesia, from the earliest known history to the country’s modern history and politics.
4. VISITS TO PLACES OF INTEREST, FOR EXAMPLE BALI AND THE TEMPLES OF CENTRAL JAVA. To familiarize students with sites of historical interest, which are also of interest to tourists.
5. WORKSHOPS To critically examine the ongoing program through papers and presentations. This will involve our students plus participants from inside and outside the university.

ARTS AND CULTURE

SEMESTER  I Give explanations about the diversity of Indonesian culture, and how this has come about.
HISTORY AND POLITICS

To teach students the complexity of Indonesia, from the earliest known history to the country’s modern history and politics.

SEMESTER  I As students learn about the various provinces in Indonesia, they gain a basic knowledge about the history of that area: The early kingdoms, the colonial period, the fight for independence (1945), and the recent developments happening inside the country.
WORKSHOPS AND VISITS

TO PLACES OF HISTORICAL INTEREST

SEMESTER I    VISITS:
  1. A six day, five night visit to “The Island of the Gods” Bali. On this trip the students will visit Ubud, Tanah Lot, the famous Kuta Beach and other areas of interest.
  2. A three day, two night visit to Central java, visiting the many small temples at Bandungan, the larger temple of Borobudur and Prambahan, and other places of interest in that area.

INFORMATION  FOR PROSPECTIVE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

  1. This is a sixty day program, including the arrival and departure days. This is because of the Indonesian Immigration Department regulations.
  2. The visa used in this program is known as a “Sosial Budaya” visa, and is applied for from the Indonesian Embassy in the country of origin. It requires a sponsorship letter from President University.
  3. The itenerary for this program is flexible, depending on the time of the year that the students arrive. (Hopefully they will arrive on a Sunday.) Basically this is because there may be some local festivities or avtivities that the students may wish to see, or possibly participate in. Normally the program would follow this itenerary:

1

Students are picked up at the Soekarno-Hatta airport Jakarta and brought to the dorm. They will be shown to their rooms, given time to unpack and take a shower. Depending on  their arrival time, they will be shown around Resto Plaza where they may want to eat. Rest and recreation and mix with the local students for the rest of the day.

2

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am, a tour of the university and the surrounding areas. Lunch at 12 noon. In the afternoon, at 2pm, a Bahasa Indonesia placement test to check their level of the local language. After the test, free time.

3

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am, morning classes of Bahasa Indonesia in their appropriate levels. Lunch at 12 noon until 1pm. Afternoon classes in Bahasa Indonesia in their appropriate level. Plus a one hour class on the history of Bali.

Morning call at 7am. Breakfast at 8am, then morning classes continuing Balinese history. Lunch at 12 noon. Afternoon classes of Bahasa Indonesia in the appropriate level.

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am, morning classes on the History of the Balinese People, concentrating on the religious problems that they suffered in Java, which eventually forced them to flee to Bali. Lunch at 12 noon. Afternoon Bahasa Indonesia classes, concentrating on bargaining and shopping at markets.

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast at then 8am, morning classes on the History of the Balinese people, concentrating on modern Bali. Lunch at 12 noon. Afternoon Bahasa Indonesia classes, concentrating on bargaining and shopping at markets.

Days seven and eight should be a Saturday and Sunday, no classes will be held, but some activities will be organized which include our local students. This may be a shopping trip to Jakarta, a barbeque or other social function.

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am Bahasa Indonesia classes, concentrating on conversation relating to travel.

Lunch at 12 noon.

Then at 1pm more Bahasa Indonesia classes relating to travel.

Afternoon classes continue with Bahasa Indonesia relating to shopping and bargaining.

Wake up call 6-30am.

Breakfast at 7am then at 7-30am board the bus for a visit to the American Embassy.

Lunch at 12 noon. Then a visit to @america, in Pacific Place, where there is a shop specializing in western food just in case the students are already missing their favourite food.

Wake up call at 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, Bahasa Indonesia classes relating to travel and bargaining. Lunch at 12 noon. Then at 1pm, afternoon classes continue with Bahasa Indonesia relating to travel and bargaining. Pack and get ready to travel.

Wake up call 6am. Breakfast at 6-30, 8am (Depending on flight times.) board a bus to go to Soekarno-Hatta airport. Travel to Denpasar Bali. After arrival, travel to a hotel at fabulous Kuta Beach. Book in, then free time to shop or surf.

Breakfast at 7am, then at 8am board the tour bus to visit North Bali, Singaraja and Lake Bratan ( Approx. 10-11 Hour tour.)

Return to hotel, then check the shopping and local restaurants.

Day

14

Breakfast 7am. Then at 8am board the tour bus to visit The Royal Temple, Taman Ayun at Mengwi, move on to the Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest to see hundreds of mischievious Balinese monkeys in their natural habitat, then on to the incredibly beautiful Tanah Lot Temple.

Breakfast at 6-30am. At 7am board the bus for a tour that is special for environmentalists. A visit to explore Bali’s Mangrove Information Center where they will see 21 varieties of major and minor mangrove trees, 28 species of associated mangrove flora, over 60 species of birds, more than thirty types of crustaceans, many species of reptiles and other life forms that make their home there.

After returning to the hotel, free time to explore the many local restaurants and shops.

Breakfast at 6-30. At 7am board the bus for a tour to Ubud. On this full day tour the students will explore the unique artist village at Ubud, a heaven for art lovers and one of the most pristine areas in Bali. The village has many sophisticated palaces with their traditional architectural styles. Ubud is also known for its Botanic Gardens, the gardens offer a range of micro-climates. There is a river, waterfalls and natural forest. The morning ride will drive up to the Muji Art Galery to witness Balinese artists at work. Later the tour will visit Puri Saren Agung, the Ubud Palace from where Ubud was ruled from the late 1800s till World War II. There is a nice walk across the palace to visit the Art Market. The tour continues to the Ubud Botanic Gardens located in Kutuh Kaja village; the gardens face the Bird Village of Petulu, home of the famous white egrets. Walking down a set of stairs, a Javanese Joglo sits in a green glade. The walking paths meander through shady fern gardens and coffee and cocoa trees. Clumps of flowering shrubs, bamboos and spice trees line a quiet river.

After returning to the hotel, time to organize the things you purchased. Then free time for a stroll around.

Last day in Bali. Wake up early, have breakfast. Then a few hours to look around for the last minute bargains.

At 11-30am (Depending on flight times.) check out and board the bus for the flight back to Jakarta. Travel back to the President University dorm to re-unite with Indonesian friends, and have a good nights rest.

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am, go to the university for a discussion in Bahasa Indonesia about the trip to Bali, and how modern Bali differs from historical Bali as was covered earlier in the program. Lunch at 12 noon. At 1-30pm students will return to the university and attempt to write an account of their trip in Bahasa Indonesia. Class will finish at 4pm.

Morning call at 7am, Breakfast, then at 8am, go the university to practise some traditional Balinese dances and songs with the help of our Balinese students. Lunch at 12 noon. More Balinese and Javanese traditional music and dancing, with students explaining the differences between the styles.

Should be Saturday and Sunday. No classes but events will be organized by our Indonesian students. Expected programs:  Outbound, tree planting, soccer, futsal, etc.

Wake up call at 6-30am, breakfast, then at 7-30am board the bus for a trip to Jakarta: Visting the National Museum, National Monument, and a high school around Block M, then on to Pasar  Grande Mall for souvenir shopping.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast then at 8-30am a trip around Jababeka, visiting Multi National Companies, one in the morning, and one after lunch.  (Mattel and Unilever)

Wake up call at 7am, breakfast, then at 8-30am, a visit to the local state institutions: Polres, Regency Office, and at 12.00 visiting ATMI.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast then at 8-30am, a half day seminar at PU. Group Presentation, Topic: Our Thoughts about Indonesia: The Good Parts and the Not So Good Part, and What Should Be Done to Improve it?.

Afternoon, practicing the Acehnese Saman Dance.

Option 1: Free Day.

Option 2: Visiting one Pesantren located in Cibarusah. Theme: Discussing the curriculum.

Wake up call at 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, morning classes on the history of the temples in Borobudur and Prambanan, and their relationship to the Hindu people in Bali. Lunch at 12 noon. At 1pm afternoon Bahasa Indonesia classes, concentrating on bargaining and shopping at markets.

Sunday

No classes. Packing, and preparation for the trip to Jogyakarta. At approxiamately 8pm board the bus from Jababeka for the first part of the journey, going to Bandungan.

Monday

Arrive in Bandungan. Check into hotel, then travel the short distance to the temples at Bandungan. Buy some food and souvenirs. Climb the hills to visit all the small temples and statues in the forest.

At approximately 4pm return to the hotel and have a good rest.

Tuesday

Wake up call at 6-30am, breakfast at 7am then travel by bus to Ambarawa train museum. Ride the old train to the top of the mountain, then down again to take photos of the many old trains. Around 4pm board the bus for the trip to Borobudur. Book into hotel.

Wednesday

Wake up call at 6am, breakfast at 6-30, board the bus to visit the beautiful temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. At 5pm board the bus again for the trip to Yogyakarta. Book into hotel, have dinner and a rest.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8-30, visit to  Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM),  and listen to a lecture on the history and culture of Indonesia.

Afternoon: Shopping in Jalan Malioboro.

Night: Board the bus and leave for Jababeka at 8 PM.

Arrive at Jababeka, free time for unpacking. Total rest

Wake up call at 7am, breakfast, then at 8-30am practise some traditional  music and dancing from Central Java, with the help of some local students.

Sunday

Wake up call 6-30am, breakfast, then at 7-30am visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). This is a whole day trip.
Day 36

Monday

Free day to prepare for a workshop at PU. Theme: Indonesia-US Relations, Partnership in the Making?.
Day 37

Tuesday

Wake up call 6-30am, breakfast, then at 7-30am board the bus for a visit to the Botanical Garden in Bogor. This is a full day trip, which continues on with a visit to the Presidential Palace.
Day 38

Wednesday

Wake up call at 6-30am, breakfast, then at 7-30am a visit to Universitas Indonesia in Depok.  Topic: Bilateral Cooperation in the fight against Global Warming. Continues with a discussion with the local students. This is a full day trip.
Day 39

Thursday

Wake up call at 6-30am breakfast, then at 7-30am board the bus for a visit to Universitas Paramadina. Topic: Bilateral Relations Regarding Inter-religious Dialog.

Afternoon, sightseeing to places to be decided.

Day 40

Friday

Wake up call 6-30am, breakfast, then board the bus at 7-30am for a visit to Universitas Islam Syarif Hidayatullah at Ciputat. Topic:  The Fight Against Global Terrorism.
Day 41

Saturday

Wake up call at 6-30am, breakfast, then at 7-30am board the bus for a Half day seminar at  Universitas  Padjadjaran in Bandung,

Topic: Indonesia-US Relations after the visit of President Obama.

Afternoon: Visiting Factory Outlets.

Day 42

Sunday

Wake up call at 7am, breakfast, then Preparation for workshop.

Late Afternoon till night, Cultural Performances with PU students.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, Advanced Bahasa Indonesia Course.

Afternoon: Learning Indonesian Martial Arts, Pencak Silat.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, visiting a local church in Lippo Cikarang. Continue later to the Water Boom.

Monday

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Topic: The Latest  Developments in the Indonesia-US Relations.
Day 51,

Tuesday

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, a visit to the Indonesian Parliament (Commission I), discussing the Indonesian democracy.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, visit The Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta. Topic: Indonesia-US Relations: Past, Present, and Future.
Day 53, Thursday Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, visit President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Topic: The Future of Indonesia.

Wake up call 7am, breakfast, then at 8am, Visiting Ancol, full day.

No classes, Cultural activities organized by PU students,  involving the full week end.
